Professional Hardwood Wax Removal & Polish Stripping
Don't sand away your precious wood. If your floors are cloudy, sticky, or patchy due to "quick-fix" store polishes, our dust-free chemical stripping process reveals the original beauty underneath.
The Problem with "Quick-Shine" Retail Floor Polishes
In Setauket, we see it all the time: a homeowner wants to freshen up their hardwood for a party or a home listing, so they grab a bottle of "Liquid Wax" or "Floor Restorer" from a big-box store.
While these products provide an instant shine, they are actually made of acrylic polymers. Unlike a professional polyurethane finish, these polishes never fully cure. They remain soft and "thirsty," trapping dirt, pet hair, and micro-debris within the waxy layers.
Common Problematic Brands:
- • Mop & Glo
- • Rejuvenate
- • Quick Shine
- • Orange Glo
- • Bona Polish (Acrylic)
- • Murphy Oil Soap
Why It's Getting Worse:
The "Haze" Effect: Each new layer of polish traps more moisture from Long Island's humidity, causing the floor to look milky or white.
The "Footprint" Problem: Because the wax is soft, you start seeing "ghost footprints" that can't be mopped away.
The "Peeling" Disaster: Eventually, the wax starts to flake off in high-traffic areas, leaving ugly, irregular patches.
Stripping vs. Full Refinishing
Not every floor needs to be sanded down to raw wood. Know your options.

How to Maintain Your "New" Floors
Once we remove the wax, follow these rules to keep your Setauket floors glowing for years.
-
1
Throw Away the "Polish" Bottles
Never use anything that promises to "add shine" or "restore." Use only pH-neutral hardwood cleaners.
-
2
Mind the Humidity
Long Island coastal air is humid. Keep your home between 35-55% humidity to prevent wood expansion.
-
3
Microfiber Only
Avoid the "string mop" and bucket. A slightly damp (not wet) microfiber pad is the gold standard.
Wax Removal FAQ
Can I just use vinegar to remove the wax myself?
Vinegar is acidic and can permanently etch the actual polyurethane finish beneath the wax. DIY attempts often result in patchy, uneven floors that ultimately require professional sanding. Our chemical strippers are pH-balanced specifically for hardwood.
How do I know if I have wax buildup or if the finish is just worn?
Try the "Coin Test": Gently scratch a hidden area of the floor with a coin. If a white, waxy substance curls up, that's polish buildup. If it just scratches the wood, your finish is likely worn out and needs a screen/recoat or sanding.
Is the stripping agent smelly or toxic?
Savera uses low-VOC, odor-free agents. You do not need to leave the home during the process, though we recommend keeping pets and children out of the work area until the floors are dry.
Will this remove deep scratches in the wood?
No. Stripping only removes surface buildup. If your wood has deep gouges or scratches that go through the finish into the grain, full sanding is the only solution. We can help you determine which service you need during our estimate.
